A STRAW-GLAZED STONEWARE
FIGURE OF AN EARTH SPIRIT
SUI DYNASTY (AD 581-617)
The ferocious fgure is shown seated on a
rectangular base with front legs stifly braced
and claws spread, the jaws open on the sides and
the teeth bared. The feline face has a scowling
expression below the ribbed horns that sweep
back to fank the forked top of the segmented
spines that center applied comma-shaped curls.
The whole is covered with a crackle-sufused clear
glaze of olive color.

Compare the similar fgure described as white-
glazed with dark brown details from Anyang, and
dated Sui dynasty, illustrated by Zhang Bai in
Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in
China - 12 - Henan, Beijing, 2008, no. 41.
The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test
no. P299j6 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
