century, and the earlier years of the present one.

The choicest Satstmia faience, the finest red and gold
Kaga pottery, and the exquisite Mikawachi porcelain

were all made during the last century ; whilst the
beautiful kinrande and sometsiike styles of decoration

during the early years of the present one
The decadeiice of fapanese art coincides with the

growth of the feeling which led to the opening of the
country to intercourse with Western stations, and since

then its character has entirely changed, and Japanese
art is now, alas I almost a thing of the past.
