The earliest family connections to the Philippines date to 1910 when R. Eroles moved his photography studio from Barcelona to Manila,
where it remained until the 1930s. His daughter Esperanza Lea (nee Eroles) and her husband were residents of Manila, and purchased Baguio
Rice Fields and Lots 1224 and 1225 from the artist between 1944 and 1948. The painting of the Baguio Rice Fields was commissioned by
the Lea family and depicts the view from the family’s summer home in the mountains of Baguio. The image below is a copy of the original
photo that was given to Amorsolo for the commission. The family relocated to California in 1949, where the paintings have remained.
