A SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRASS FIGURE OF HEVAJRA
TIBET, 15TH CENTURY
Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4715
11 cm (4 1/4 in.) high
HKD15,000 - 30,000
西藏 十五世紀 錯銀錯紅銅喜金剛銅像
Hevajra is the principal yidam (meditational deity) of the Anuttarayoga
Tantras. This figure’s diminutive scale and many fine details suggest
it was original placed at the center of a sculptural lotus mandala. The
eyes bear copper and silver inlay. The nuanced fanged expression is
somehow fierce yet amiable. There is a subtle movement to the toes,
enlivening the piece.
The long, beaded festoons that fall from his consort, Nairatmya’s belt
and trace her outstretched legs are characteristic of 15th-century
examples. A closely related figure is in the Walters Art Museum,
Baltimore (54.3101).
