A RARE AND WELL-CARVED PALE GREY AND RUSSET JADEITE
SNUFF BOTTLE
1800-1900 This bottle is particularly unusual in the manner in which the carver
has continued the dense decorative scheme onto the top of the mouth
Of compressed rounded form, the bottle is carved overall, including
and the base. The subject matter of five (wu) bats (fu) can be read as
the top of the mouth and the base, in low relief with a cloud pattern,
wufu, meaning a wish for five blessings. For a further discussion on this
featuring bats on the sides and lingzhi sprays on the top of the mouth and
topic, see T. Bartholomew, Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, Asian Art
base.
