                                                                         The tapering body is fnely decorated in
                                                                         relief with a band of leafy fower scroll
                                                                         bearing four large blossoms between a band
                                                                         of narrow chrysanthemum petals below and
                                                                         a ruyi collar on the rounded shoulder. The
                                                                         tall neck is decorated on each side with a pair
                                                                         of confronted archaistic birds between bow-
                                                                         string borders and repeated on the pair of
                                                                         tubular handles, all below a ruyi band at the
                                                                         fared rim. The vase is covered overall with
                                                                         a glaze of soft sea-green color that thins on
                                                                         the raised decoration and rims. Together with
                                                                         ftted 19th century French ormolu mounts.

                                                                         A RARE RELIEF-DECORATED CELADON-
                                                                         GLAZED BALUSTER VASE
                                                                         QIANLONG CARVED SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARK
                                                                         AND OF THE PERIOD (1735-1796)

                                                                         The high shouldered jar is decorated in
                                                                         relief with a multitude of chilong dragons and
                                                                         phoenix, their sinuous bodies highly stylized
                                                                         with raised bosses terminating in curled
                                                                         tendrils. The short slightly fared neck rises
                                                                         to a lipped rim encircled by a wan emblem
                                                                         border. The waisted base is decorated
                                                                         with a further border of overlapping lotus
                                                                         panels. The glaze is of a rich olive-green
                                                                         tone pooling in the recesses to highlight the
                                                                         decoration.

                                                                         Vases of this form and decoration are extremely
                                                                         rare and this appears to be one of only two
                                                                         known examples. The other example was sold at
                                                                         Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1356.
