A VERY RARE GILT-BRONZE STANDING
FIGURE OF WILLOW GUANYIN
TANG DYNASTY (AD 618-907)
The Bodhisattva of compassion is cast standing in tribhangka on
a lotus pedestal above a pierced hexagonal base. His right arm
is raised, holding a willow branch, while his pendent left arm
holds an ambrosia bottle. Adorned with a long necklace, bangles,
a dhoti and a long flowing shawl around his shoulders. The hair
is fashioned in a high chignon, and adorned in the centre with
the figure of Amitabha. He has an elaborate detachable flaming
mandorla pierced with two birds in the centre, and surmounted by a
standing Amitabha.
