           AN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE
           Ma Shaoxuan
           Signed and dated Wuxu year, corresponding to 1898
           Of rounded rectangular shape, painted on one main face with a
           kingfisher delicately balanced on the stem of a lotus pad amidst
           lightly-painted lotus flowers and other pads with two fish below and
           a title with seal above, the reverse with a well-written forty-character
           inscription, after the Song dynasty poet Zhou Dunyi, followed by the
           date, signature and a negative-script seal Xuan; stopper.

           For another 1898 dated crystal bottle bottle painted with the identical
           subject but in a different palette and with perhaps, rather more
           loosely-handled brush work and calligraphy, and with a near identical
           inscription to the reverse, see Sotheby’s, Paris, ‘An Aristocratic French
           Collection’, 12 June 2018, lot 110.

           Another with the identical scene was illustrated by Susan Page, ICSBS
           Journal, Spring, 2020, (inside front cover), and another of flattened
           pear shape from the Quentin Loh Sze On Collection was illustrated by
           Vanessa F. Holden, Chinese Snuff Bottles, NUS Museums, Singapore,
           2002, p. 70, no. 286.

           See also another Ma crystal bottle (dated 1904) from the Elsa

           lot 15, with a scene of mandarin ducks and lotus on one side and the
