The four paintings represent scenes from the
Ramayana, including a scene from the Balakanda, or
‘Book of Childhood,’ in which King Dashratha holds
court with his young sons; the Sage Vishwamitra
requesting the assistance of Dashratha’s sons; Rama
and Lakshmana meeting with Sugriva; and Rama
and Lakshmana approaching Ravana’s court. Four
illustrations from this series sold as separate lots at
Christie’s New York, 12 September 2018, lots 385
through 388, each for $5,000.
