                                                              Saigyo Hoshi was descended from Tawara Toda Hidesato, renouncing
                                                              his secular life in 1137. He started a long journey with a broad hat
                                                              and staff, with which he is always depicted. Trainee artists sometimes
                                                              learned to draw by representing him with a few cursive strokes, a
                                                              motif known as Saigyo ni Fuji or Fujimi Saigyo.
