A LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AN ONI
Edo period (19th century)
Portrayed as Oni-no-nenbutsu, the dark-colored demon in the guise
of an itinerant priest reciting nenbutsu (ritual recitation of the name
of Amida Buddha) as he solicits funds for a temple, an oi (priest’s
traveling pack) strapped to his back and an account book suspended
from his left hand, his horned head with a slightly humorous
expression, with inlaid crystal eyes; attached to a base fashioned as a
rocky outcropping scattered with lichen
