russet skin, the attention and depth of the carving, and with the
1272 subjects portrayed in exceptionally lively poses.
A WELL-CARVED PALE GREENISH-GREY AND RUSSET
JADE BRUSH POT While depictions of scholars or immortals in landscapes are more
18TH-19TH CENTURY commonly found on Qing-dynasty jade brush pots, hunting scenes
The sides of the irregularly-shaped brush pot are deeply carved with are somewhat more unusual. The depiction of horses appears as
a hunting scene on one side and two fgures, one riding a horse, on topical imagery in the arts during the early Qing dynasty among
the reverse. The carving is highlighted by the russet color. the Manchu rulers, who were themselves descendants of nomadic
herdsmen. It is known that Emperor Qianlong, while still a Prince,
6 in. (15.2 cm.) high, ftted spinach-green jade stand prided himself on being a keen horseman and was portrayed as
such in Court paintings.
