Made for James Brydges, advanced to the
Dukedom in 1719 and known as 'Princely
Chandos.' J. Goldsmith-Phillips calls him "one
of the most notable fgures of 18th century
          England" (China-Trade Porcelain, p. 84). His
          service was particularly lavish, containing
fountains, basins, jugs, baskets and numerous
dishes; this is one of the largest - if not the
          largest - dish to survive.
