Birthmark
zhi (chi)
Given the Chinese obsession for seeing everything in a symbolical light, it is not
surprising that the birthmark should be invested with significance. If the birthmark is on
the sole of the foot, is black and looks like a tortoise’s shell, one can rest assured that
the person so marked will attain to high office.
If a woman has a birthmark on her lip, spectators will assume she has a matching one
on her genitals. Similarly, a birthmark on the cheek suggests a counterpart on the
breast.
