AND IVORY OKIMONO
OF CHOKARO SENNIN
AND HIS HORSE

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
The immortal showing a fine expression
with finely incised hair and beard, amusingly
a few of his teeth are missing, wearing a
long flowing robe carved from wood with an
ivory reishi fungus attached to his obi, his
face, hands, and feet also carved from ivory,
standing on a gnarled wood base, carrying
a cane in one hand and holding up a wood
gourd, from which a small movable ivory
horse issues, in the other. Signed RYOKO to
the underside of the sennin’s robe.
HEIGHT 38.6 cm
Condition: Very good condition with traces
of wear and few natural age cracks here
and there.
