‘TROMPE-L’OEIL’ OKIMONO
OF TANGERINES
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
Carved as three small mikan (tangerines) on a leafy
branch, one partly peeled, the pale orange-stained
dimpled skin partially pulled back to reveal the white
pith-covered flesh. An accomplished work at the very
height of naturalistic fruit carving.
HEIGHT 4 cm, LENGTH 9.2 cm
Condition: Very good condition with traces of wear
and some minor hairlines on one tangerine.
Provenance: British collection.

Carved as a half-peeled tangerine with the orange-
stained dimpled and cracked skin partially removed
to reveal the white flesh underneath, with two fruit
segments detached from the rest. An accomplished
work at the very height of naturalistic fruit carving.
HEIGHT 4 cm, LENGTH 9.2 cm
Condition: Excellent condition with only few minor
traces of wear.
Provenance: British collection.
