66  |   A FINE GOLD-INLAID SHAKUDO TSUBA
                  WITH WARRIORS CROSSING THE UJI RIVER

            Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

            Of tate-maru-gata (oval) form with one hitsu and a gilt rim, worked   SIZE 7.1 x 6.7 cm
            in takazogan depicting a scene from the battle of Uji, with warriors   WEIGHT 99.7 g
            on horseback and in full armor treading through finely incised
            waves, all on a fine shakudo nanako ground. Each warrior has a   Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear as well as
            specific function: the foremost is holding a bow and arrow, while   few small dents and scratches.
            the one in the middle is carrying a large bag on his back and the   Provenance: French private collection.
            last is raising a flag waving in the wind. The reverse shows a temple
            rising from gold waves, executed just as on the obverse, with the   Estimate EUR 1,500
