         A DOUCAI ‘BIRTHDAY’ DISH
         YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE-BLUE   ᪺㢫᢬nj㮓ྑ૔൷⎽ᩅ♄↲nj㢴२Վಧ᜷ᕋᢎ
         WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)

         The dish is finely painted in the interior with five iron-red bats,
                                                           ᅃ卿ݻಃսपⰰᆭᙠǯ⏎ݤս⡚ᆭ⥾Ն〘〟Ԭᡥ卿༡ዪǸՆ
         wufu, flying around a fruiting peach tree growing from the side of
                                                           ◙ᒨ೰ǹ厎⣔ᆭ⥾᧦⶟Ǯᱡ᭢卿㬪Ɽ⥾ྒྷ⒢厎ㆁᆭ⥾᧦ჾǯ
         a cliff that overhangs a blue rock rising from breaking green waves.
         The exterior is painted with pairs of bats alternating with four   ⏎ം೅⥾೰៧ᦔᎰ卿ᦔᎰ◙೰எᡪǯ㑷ᄓ㬪Ɽ㫐஄ݤᝧǸഌ
         fruiting branches, each incorporating a Shou medallion, all within   ᳖㫇᫈ჺㅳǹᥓᝧ᪪ǯ
         double blue line borders.

         A further example is illustrated by T. Bartholomew, ‘Botanical Puns

         also explains that the scene depicted invokes the traditional Chinese
         birthday greeting ‘May your happiness be as deep as the Eastern Sea
         and may you live to be as old as the Southern Mountain’.
