                                      The  pictorialization of the  Tale of
                                      Genji  was  a well-established  practice:
                                      the painting and figurai style of these
                                      screens  are archaic, but the overall
                                      design concept is innovative for
                                      the period.
                                      The signature and seals identify  the
                                      artist as Shimokóbe Gyokugen, who
                                      was active in Kyoto during the early
