           A FINE PALE GREEN JADE CARVING OF A LUOHAN        It has been argued that the popularity of the subject of luohans in jade
           IN A GROTTO                                       carvings was partially due to a woodblock print on the theme, printed in
           18th century                                      the 18th century catalogue Gu yu tu pu (古玉圖譜), spuriously attributed
           Crisply carved as a remote mountain grove with fruiting peach trees,   to the Emperor Gaozong (1127-1162). It is also likely that highly prized
           enclosing a lone luohan holding a fan in one hand and seated cross-  rubbings of engravings of the Sixteen Arhats taken from Shengyin Temple
           legged in meditation beside a waterfall, the back also with pine and   (which were based on a set of paintings by Ding Guanpeng (1708-1771)
           wutong trees growing from craggy rocks, the stone of pale greenish-  and were themselves originally based on paintings by Guan Xiu (852-913),
           white tone with concentrated areas of milky mottling and light grey   stimulated jade carvers to illustrate the subject; see J.Rawson, Chinese
