A BLACK-LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO
Edo period (1615-1868),
probably 19th century
The rounded rectangular body decorated in
black and red takamaki-e on one side with
Shoki the Demon-Queller caught in a storm,
standing with one hand raised to the brim
of his large hat, searching for fleeing oni
(demons) embellished in gold togidashi maki-e
shown on the reverse, the interior of rich
nashiji; unsigned. 7.7cm (3in) high.

An Inlaid Gold-Lacquer Two-Case Inro
Edo period (1615-1868)
or Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The broad nashiji body lacquered in gold
and iro-e takamaki-e with a seabream lying
against an awabi and other assorted shells
and aquatic plants on one side and a seashell
gatherer and a young child standing beside a
boat on the other, the highlights inlaid in shell,
signed on the base in gold lacquer Shogetsu,
with an amber ojime and a wood netsuke in
the form of Shoki and an oni.
