PROVENANCE
The collection was formed by the present owner’s great-grandfather,
from late 19th century to early 20th century.
This present hu tablet is an extremely rare cloisonne enamel example
bearing this type of decoration. The association of fying cranes
and trigrams is typical of the Jiajing period and is usually found on
porcelains under Emperor Jiajing’s reign. The motif of fying cranes
(yipin niao) implies wishes for rising high in rank. The trigrams are
ancient symbols associated with Daoist divination. It refects Emperor
Jiajing’s keen interest in Daoism and the pursuit of immortality.
