The Mahayana Bodhisattva Skanda
The Dharma protector, also known as Weituo, is
the devoted guardian of Buddhist monasteries who
guards the teachings of Buddhism. The leader of the
twenty-four celestial guardian deities mentioned in the
Suvarnaprabhasa Sutra, or the Golden Light Sutra, he is
sometimes called Hufa Weituo zuntian pusa (Honoured
Dharma Protector Skanda Bodhisattva). In Chinese
Sutras the image of Skanda is always found at the end
of the Sutra as a reminder of Weituo’s vow to protect
and preserve the Mahayana Buddhist teachings.
