The Zhang Lineage, based in Shanghai Longhua,
is a reputable Traditional Chinese Medicine
family. Forefather Zhang Jun-tiao (1609-1692)
pioneered the family’s medical practice. In the
following three hundred and sixty years, the
Zhang’s academic school of Chinese Medicine
has been in practice for fourteen generations and
was highly respected in the southern regions of
the Yangtze River towards the end of the Qing
Dynasty and the early Republic period. Many
members of the family were not only skillful in
medical arts but were also excellent painters and
calligraphers. Some cultural nobles who came
for clinical consultation frequently, such as Ren
Yi, Wu Changshuo, Wang Zhen, Wu Hufan and Yu
Youren etc., naturally became friends of Zhang’s
medical practitioners, and dedicated artworks
and calligraphy to family members as gifts or
mementos.
