For another undated bottle by the same artist, formerly in the Linda
Riddell Hoffman Collection, see Bonhams, New York, 22 March 2011,
lot 10. See also a bottle painted by the renowned contemporary artist
Liu Shouben, with an exquisite portrait of Ye Xiaofeng dated 1992,
which according to the inscription was completed from memory. Liu’s
inscription, which reads: My teacher, Ye Xiaofeng, was born in 1900. In
1974 he passed away. To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of
his death, I painted this portrait based on my memory of him.
Ye’s name was Bengxi, but some writers prefer to call him by his
courtesy name, Xiaofeng. He and his two brothers, Bengqi and
Bengzhen, shared the middle character of their names, as was
common for male siblings or cousins, and the last characters of their
names shared the same radical.
