AN IMPERIAL INSCRIBED WHITE JADE
‘PRUNUS’ PEBBLE
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of irregular form, the pebble is carved in low relief with a single
blossoming prunus tree emerging from rocks on one side, incised
on the other side with an Imperial eight-line poem in praise of
prunus, followed by a Qianlong guisi cyclical date corresponding
to 1773, a seal reading Guxiang, ‘Fragrance of Antiquity’, and
another seal Taipu, ‘Unassuming’. The stone has a pale celadon
tinge, partially covered by a bright russet ‘skin’.
