PROPERTY FROM A HONG KONG PRIVATE COLLECTION This charming box is characteristic of the flamboyant and
colourful style that was favoured among the gentry class of
A SANCAI LOBED BOX AND COVER the Tang and Liao dynasties. A circular box of this type, in the
LIAO DYNASTY
Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, is illustrated
the domed cover decorated with a lobed cartouche enclosing in William Watson, Tang and Liao Ceramics, London, 1984, pl.
a stylised floral motif comprising of whorls, striations and 187; and another box from the collection of K.C. Chung, was
overlapping petals, applied with a cream-coloured glaze sold at Christie’s New York, 21st September 2001, lot 417. See
splashed with green and amber markings also a green-glazed box included in the exhibition Sui To no
10 cm, 4 in. Bijutsu [Arts of the Sui and Tang dynasty], Osaka Municipal
Museum of Art, Osaka, 1976, cat. no. 144.

In Pursuit of Antiquities: Thirty-fifth Anniversary Exhibition of
the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, were probably inspired by silver ware with traced decoration.
1995, cat. no. 91. Furthermore the circular beads bordering the cover are
reminiscent of pearl beading favoured in silver. A lobed silver
box decorated with florets and attributed to the Tang dynasty,
