D’UN AMBASSADEUR AU JAPON

LOTS 8–14
Collected in the early years of the 20th century by
a Belgian diplomat in Japan, this beautiful small
collection brings together objects that demonstrate
a keen eye for quality and rarity, including exquisite
imperial porcelains and rare early Buddhist bronzes.
A letter written by Yosaku Yoshida, the Master of
Ceremonies at the Japanese court, to the Belgian
diplomate on the occasion of the accession to the
throne of the Emperor of Japan, dated 11th July 1916
(Figs. 1 and 2) reflects the deep appreciation and
respect this Belgian diplomate held at the Japanese
court. The objects offered here have remained in the
family by descent until the present day.
