Wine drinking is a common scene in paintings found in the Astana area of the Gaochang
Kingdom (mid-5th to the mid-7th century), with both male and female figures. Compare with
pieces of two paintings excavated from Khara-khara-khoto, Astana Cemetery, 5th century,
illustrated in A.Stern, Innermost Asia: Detailed Report of Explorations in Central Asia, Kan-su
and Eastern Iran, Oxford, 1928, vol.3, pl. CVII.
