underglaze-blue and enamelled in red, green
and yellow with four panels depicting boys at
play, variously drumming, chasing each other,
flying kites and mimicking soldiers in terraced

A DOUCAI ‘PHOENIX’ DISH
Daoguang seal mark and of the period
Painted in bright enamels over underglaze
blue with a central medallion of three phoenix
encircling a central flowerhead, amongst leafy,
scrolling stems, the exterior with two pairs of
confronting phoenix alternating with stylised
lotus blooms, borne on leafy tendrils. 19cm
(7.1/2in) diam.
