This sauce tureen may originally have ampli-
fied 272-piece dinner service, described
a
merely
" that was ordered Elias Hasket
as "ciphered, by
a
Derby (1739-1799), wealthy Salem merchant
active in the China trade. It was presumably
part of the cargo of the i786-87 voyage of the
Grand Turk, a shipfinanced by Derby and
one of thefirstAmerican vessels to embark on
trade with Chinafollowing the voyage of the
Empress of China.
