Ivory, the fine engravings rubbed dark.
Eyes inlaid with black horn. The animal
is sitting on the hind legs and calls with
stretched neck. His upper body covered
with scales, from armpits flames are
flickering out – a sign of his mythological
origin. The smooth, very long hair of his
tail reaches up to his skull. Height 6.5cm.
Sign.: Kangyoku. Condition A/B.

HAKUTAKU ON A SEAL PLATE.
NETSUKE EINES GROßEN HAKUTAKU
AUF EINER SIEGELPLATTE.
Japan. 1st half 19th c.
Ivory with dark stained parts and golden
yellow patina. Eyes inlaid in dark horn.
The Hakutaku is sitting on the hind legs
and has raised the left paw. With its head
stretched, it has opened its mouth and
shows its fangs. Mane and tail with long
strands and curls resembling a Shishi.
He has snake skin on the back and large
scales are covering his breast. On the
underside of the seal plate a variation of
the character for Long Life. Height 7cm.
