The present chairs, with their heavy zitan members and mixture of angular and archaic scrollwork and
ruyi motifs, are characteristic of Qing dynasty palace furniture; compare, for example, with two examples
illustrated by Hu Desheng in The Palace Museum Collection: A Treasury of Ming & Qing Dynasty Palace
Furniture, vol. I, Beijing, 2007, pp. 114 and 116, fgs. 94 and 96. Chairs with squat proportions, such as the
present examples, were once thought to be for women’s quarters or for sedans, but are now thought to
have been used on boats, where the low height would have provided additional stability.
