Born in Guangdong, He Huaishuo moved to Taiwan in
1961 and graduated from National Taiwan Normal University,
before furthering his education at St. John’s University in
New York. He taught at several universities in Taiwan,
including Taipei National University of the Arts and
National Taiwan Normal University. The artist once said:
“the modernism in Modern art is not based on the exclusion
or the inclusion of the passé. It is contingent on the artist’s
innovation or perspective in the life of the universe.” Depicting
a boy sitting pensively under a tree, Childhood is a poetic
expression of the artist’s observations on life, imbued with
               great psychological depth and pathos.
