     columnar receptacle on its back, the head with bulged eyes and
     ridged horns, the body detailed with carved fur markings and
     applied with four lug handles. It is covered in a thin glaze of pale
     greyish olive-green tone.

     PROVENANCE

     An English private collection, acquired in Hong Kong in the
     1980s

     It is very rare to find animal-form Yue celadon vessels of this large
     size. Related celadon vessels from this period have been
     published, including a smaller example modelled
     as a hawk with a similar receptacle on its back
     unearthed in Nanjing (17.5 cm. high), illustrated in
     Zhonghua wuqiannian wenwu jikan: ciqi pian, Taipei,
     1986, no. 28; and two ram-form candlestick holders,
     one of slightly larger size (34 cm. long) from the
     Reach Family and Meiyintang Collections, illustrated
     in A Dealer’s Hand: The Chinese Art World Through the
     Eyes of Giuseppe Eskenazi, London, 2012, pl. 244, the
     other smaller example sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,
     24-25 November 2014, lot 1025 (15 cm. long).
