A LARGE POWDER-BLUE-GROUND GILT-
DECORATED ‘DRAGON’ BOTTLE VASE
Guangxu six-character mark and of the period
Decorated in gilt to the globular body with a pair
of five-clawed dragons striding midst billowing
clouds in mutual pursuit of the flaming pearl, rising
to a slightly waisted neck similarly decorated
with a dragon and a phoenix amidst scrolling
clouds, separated by a register to the shoulder
containing lotus foliage alternated with stylised shou
characters, all beneath a continuous band of ruyi-
head, wood stand. 57.4cm (22 5/8in) high (2).

The present lot is rare given its impressive size, but
similar examples are known. A related powder-blue-
ground gilt-decorated ‘dragons’ bottle vase, Guangxu
six-character mark and of the period, of smaller size
but similarly decorated with dragons in pursuit of the
flaming pearl amidst billowing clouds, was sold at 252
Bonhams London, 11 May 2017, lot 150.
