dragon body. The cover is moulded with a cloud-form finial above
a movable dragon head with an extendable tongue. The underside
of the cover is impressed with the seal Yulin.

This intricately potted teapot depicts the lively imagery of the legendary
carp transforming into a dragon after leaping over the ‘Dragon Gate’,
symbolising the success of a candidate in passing the civil servant
examination in ancient China and hence onto a path of honour and 2864 (mark)
status. The signature Yulin is that of Huang Yulin, a renowned Yixing
potter active during the late 19th to early 20th century.
