NETSUKE AND A COMPASS NETSUKE
Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-
1912), 19th/20th century
Comprising two brass and one iron flint
netsuke, each with a hinged cover and
decorated with scattered blossoms in gilt
metal or silver inlays; the ash bowl cast
in brass as a kabuto and decorated with
silver “rivets”; a hinged brass case incised
with scrolling vines and opening to reveal a
compass

decorated with an uchidashi design of an
Okina mask, a fan and the mask’s storage
box, the interior lacquered black, fitted with a
russet-iron flint netsuke decorated with silver
florets, brass fittings
