“Beauty and Violence: Prints by Yoshitoshi 1839-1892”, held in
Bonhams is delighted to offer this group of unique drawings by Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, and Philadelphia in 1992.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, the last great master of the ukiyo-e genre. This
fascinating group is the second offering from the collection of Jeffrey 147
M. Kaplan, a man of wide-ranging interests with a refined sense TSUKIOKA YOSHITOSHI (1839-1892)
of taste. Raised in an artistic and cultured family, Mr. Kaplan holds An oban tate-e woodblock print triptych and preparatory drawing
degrees in English Literature and Art History from the University of Meiji era (1868-1912), dated 1884
Michigan and a Law degree from Yale. Dedicated to living with his Entitled Chohi Chohankyo hyakumanzei niramikaesu (Zhang Fei
collection, Mr. Kaplan regularly rotates works in and out of circulation, at Zhangban Bridge Glares Back at the Enemy Force of a Million),
ensuring he can spend adequate time with works from such diverse from the series Sangokushi zue (Ilustrated Romance of the Three
genres as twentieth-century design, European furniture and decorative Kingdoms), published by Komiyama Shohei; signed Oju Yoshitoshi ga,
arts, art glass, and Japanese prints and drawings. This selection of sealed Taiso; the preparatory drawing in black and red ink on paper,
preparatory drawings, several with the accompanying finished print, the joined sheets with overlay of two main horseman; unsigned
offers collectors of Yoshitoshi’s work a rare insight into the creative 14 3/8 x 9 7/8in (36.6 x 25.1cm) each sheet
