The prayer wheel is a very popular liturgical tool in Tibetan Buddhism. Its
use by the faithful is equivalent to a prayer. The Qianlong emperor was
a fervent devotee of Tibetan doctrine. He recognised the supremacy of
the religious authority of the Dalai Lama, erected temples commissioned
the production of artifacts that could serve in rituals, combining Tibetan
forms and functions with decorative techniques of pure Chinese taste.
See a related cloisonné enamel prayer wheel, Qianlong, illustrated in The
Compendium of Collection in the Palace Museum. Enamels. Cloisonné
in the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, p.83, no.52.
