A PICCHVAI DEPICTING A CITY MAP OF NATHDWARA
NORTH INDIA, RAJASTHAN, NATHDWARA, 19TH CENTURY
69¡ x 63º in. (176.2 x 160.7 cm.)
$10,000-15,000
Like lot 412, the present work depicts the city of Nathdwara, where the main
icon devoted to Shrinathji is located. At center is the icon, and two priests
make oferings at either side. Pilgrims are depicted processing through the
maze-like streets of the city, leading to the main square, where numerous
worshippers and cows are gathered.
The present painting does not depict the Moti Mahal, the private residence
of the local ruler, which was built in 1861, perhaps indicating a date of
manufacture prior to the palace’s construction.
