A GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF This finely cast bronze firgure is typical of later Ming works,
SAMANTABHADRA the heavy and elaborate jewellery and voluminous undulating
LATE MING DYNASTY robes echoing the classical styles of Northern Qi through Song
period sculpture. A larger bronze figure of Samantabhadra of
cast seated in lalitasana on a recumbent caparisonned the same period was sold in these rooms, 3rd April 2018, lot
elephant, his right hand raised in vitarkamudra, the benevolent 3677.
face framed by a foliate tiara, wearing a dhoti detailed with
elaborate borders and adorned with beaded jewellery, all
supported on a single-lotus pedestal

It is rare to find any tray of this boat form, probably created at
workshops in Guangzhou and sent as tribute to the Imperial
court, and it is even rarer to find a pair of such quality. An
individual example of similar size, also bearing a four-character
Qianlong mark within a double square, was included by
Michael Gillingham in the exhibition Chinese Painted Enamels,
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1978, cat. no. 73. See also
another pair, enamelled on a blue ground, sold at Sotheby’s
