The present imperial vase, sturdily potted and boldly painted,
belongs to a group of massive temple vessels commissioned
by the court for major temples. A closely related vase was
included in the exhibition Chūgoku Min Shin bijutsu ten
mokuroku/Chinese Arts of the Ming and Ch’ing Periods, Tokyo
National Museum, Tokyo, 1963, cat. no. 311; and another was
sold in our London rooms, 26th June 1973, lot 238. For a wucai
example, see one from the collection of Yokogawa Tamisuke
and now preserved in the Tokyo National Museum, no. TG-903.
