THE PROPERTY OF THE HETZLER FAMILY
 1275
A CARVED WHITE JADE VASE AND A
 COVER
 18TH CENTURY
 10¬ in. (27 cm.) high
 $70,000-90,000
 PROVENANCE:
 Acquired by Theodore Hetzler (1875-1945),
President and Chairman of the Board of the Fifth
Avenue Bank, circa 1900, and thence by descent
 within the family.
The finely carved decoration on this vase bears
auspicious messages. The Chinese word for ‘quail,’
an, is a homophone for the word for ‘peace.’ The
imagery of quail and millet represents the rebus:
suisui ping'an, which may be translated as 'may you
 have peace year after year'.
