                                       The Pa-kwa^ or eight trigrams  of
                                      Fou-hi, by which he and  his  fol-
                             Sioiten-te.  lowers, as we are informed, attempt
                            1426-1436.  to account for all the changes  and
                                      transmutations which take place  in
                                      nature.
                                       Tsang-kie  was the inventor of the
                                         characters, and
                                      first           Fou-hi, 3468
                                      years B.C., first traced the Pa-kwa
                                      the  eight symbols here  given,  so
                                     frequently seen on square  vases  in
                                     relief, accompanied by the  circular
                        A stamp on a  ornament, composed  apparently  of
                        bronze toad.  two fish, which forms the centre of
                                     two  trigrams  on each side of  the
                                     vase.  These Buddhist symbols were
                                     also introduced by the Japanese  in
                                     their decorative wares.
