Compare the current lot with a very similarly formed and
decorated cloisonné enamel jue sold in Christie’s Hong Kong,
28 November 2005, lot 1496.
The jue appears to have been essential to Shang dynasty (circa
1600-1100 BC) rituals, as they are one of the most numerous
vessels found in Shang royal and aristocratic tombs. It is likely
that they were used for heating alcohol over a fre; with the
post-like handles functioning as supports for lifting the vessel.
