of irregular ovoid form, carved in relief with two squirrels
scampering among twisting, gnarled vines issuing leaves and each with rounded sides gently tapering towards the foot and
grape clusters, with black inclusions, tted presentation box incurving at the rim, the mouth and base mounted in gilt-metal

The shape of these bowls is based on the Buddhist alms bowl
㶭⋩ℓġİġ⋩ḅᶾ䲨ġġġ䵈㜦䞛晽㜦滈吉厬䲳䎖 called a patra. Shortly after his enlightenment the Guardian
Kings of the Four Directions are said to have appeared to
Buddha and presented him with an alms bowl of this shape.
Bowls of this shape are also used to hold ritual o erings.
