     Dedicated to Mengjian and Madame Ruiyi

     NOTE:

     Cai Mengjian (1905-2001), sobriquet Moutian, originally from Jiangxi, graduated from Qingdao University with a degree
     in economics and further studied abroad in Japan. He later became the director of the Department of Civil Affairs in Gansu
     Province, as well as mayor of Lanzhou, among other positions. Furthermore, in 1947, he was chosen as the National
     Representative of the General Assembly. Before the end of the Cultural Revolution, he moved to Taiwan, and then finally to
     the United States.

     Cai Mengjian became acquainted with Zhang Daqian in the early part of the artist’s career. In 1941, when Zhang traveled
     to Dunhuang, he passed Gansu Province, including Lanzhou, where he met Cai Mengjian. From then on, whenever Zhang
     Daqian traveled to Lanzhou, he would be welcomed by Cai. After 1949, when Cai Mengjian moved to Taiwan and, later,
     the United States, the two would have numerous opportunities for encounter.
