area of Taiwan, Prof. Lin attended the National

Taiwan University in Taipei, where he graduated
ⷠ楸⤏⛘⇑䵕ḇ䲵ⶍἄˤ
with a bachelor’s degree in Physics. After further
training in the US, he began teaching at National 㜿㔁㌰䘬䇞奒㚦侫ᶲ⇵㶭䥨ㇵ炻㗗ẍṾ冒
Tsinghua University in Hsinchu. There he oversaw the ⮷⌛⬠佺㚠㱽炻⸞⛐ᷕ⚳⁛䴙喅埻啘昞ᶳ
installation of the Þ rst research nuclear reactor in 攟⣏ˤ⛐倗⎰⚳ả借㛇攻炻Ṿ⯙⇑䓐䴻ⷠ
Taiwan and assumed the role as a professor of Nuclear ↢ⶖ㖍㛔ˣ楁㷗ˣΐ㔎⎘䀋䫱⛘ⶍἄᷳ

Physics. After leaving the academia, he worked as an

international civil servant for the United Nations in

Prof. Lin took up calligraphy at a young age much like ⶪ⟜ᶲ㊩临㚱⽆⤏⛘⇑䥩Ṣㇳᶲ慳↢䘬啷
his grandfather, a scholar in Qing dynasty, and grew up ⑩炻ᶼ岒慷⼰檀ˤ⯙㗗忁䧖⛐尴Ụᶵ⎗傥
in an environment with a deep appreciation for Chinese 䘬⛘㕡䘤䓇䘬„忯嬻㜿㔁㌰䴎冒䘬㓞啷
Art. While he traveled around the world working for 崟⎵ˬ䶋㛐⼿欂滳˭ˤ㬌㈡㚠䔓㓞啷㗗㜿
㔁㌰䔊䓇㓞啷ᷕ⚳喅埻⑩ᷕ㚨慵天䘬ᶨ悐
the U.N., including Japan, Hong Kong, London, and
↮炻ḇ㗗ṾṢ䓇ᷕᷳ⇵㛒枸夳䘬慵天
Taiwan, he never ceased searching for great works of
ᶨ悐↮ˤ
art from unexpected places. Among all the places he
visited and sought to acquire art from, the old district
of Vienna remains the most intriguing to Prof. Lin.
While there was generally little interest in Chinese Art
in 1970-1980 Vienna, there was still a limited supply
of works in the hands of private Austrian collectors. It
was this background of unexpected discoveries that
inspired the name of his collection – the Collection of
Serendipitous Encounters. This collection is the result
of Prof. Lin’s lifelong dedication to Chinese Art, and as
much as his unforeseen encounters along the way.
