The granny knot (below) is essentially an improperly tied square knot (see
the illustration). In the granny knot the rope ends do not exit where they
entered their respective bights. Also, it is not as sturdy as the square knot.
Hitches of different kinds are good for attaching a rope to an object, or tying
things together. They also work well with other knots.
